The Dividing Line

Dust blowing over the border fence
Headlights fading in the night
The crossings slowed, the gates locked down
Under the watch of flashing lights
Voices arguing coast to coast
About freedom, law, and fear
While the desert kept its silence
And another election year drew near.

The fences grew taller along the dry plains
More patrol lights cut through the night
Orders came down to tighten the lines
And keep the crossings in sight
Walls and razor wire under desert skies
Policies hard as stone
Thousands were stopped at the southern line
While many were turned back home

Some called it safety, some called it fear
A nation divided in tone
But the border grew quieter year by year
Under a hardline throne.
Some saw order in the hardened lines
Some saw families torn apart
A nation standing at the border wall
Still divided at the heart
And the wind moves through the razor wire
Like a warning through the cold
History written in the desert sand
By the stories still untold.
