The Covenant of Old
Give thanks to God and call His name,
His wondrous deeds to all proclaim.
Sing psalms to Him, His wonders tell,
Let hearts that seek Him joyful swell.
Remember all that He has done,
The victories that His hand has won.
O seed of Abraham, His friend,
On His great word you may depend.
He is the Lord, our God alone,
His judgments through the earth are known.
The covenant He swore of old,
To thousand generations told.
When they were few and wandered far,
He was their bright and guiding star.
From land to land, a stranger band,
He held them in His mighty hand.
"Touch not my chosen," was His cry,
He rebuked kings as they passed by.
He called for famine on the land,
But sent a man by His command.
Though Joseph was in fetters bound,
In Pharaoh’s court his place was found.
The Lord of all the house was he,
To set the shackled spirit free.
Then Moses came with signs of dread,
The rivers turned to crimson red.
From frogs and flies to hail and flame,
Till Egypt trembled at His name.
He smote the firstborn in their pride,
With no more strength to turn aside.
He brought them out with silver bright,
A cloud by day, a fire by night.
He gave them bread from heaven’s hand,
And water in the desert sand.
The rock was split, the torrents ran,
Fulfilling God’s eternal plan.
He brought His people forth with song,
To Him the glory shall belong.
He gave them lands for their own prize,
Beneath the light of holy skies.
That they might keep His statutes pure,
And let His praise for aye endure!
